The Hindley Enrichment Committee is pleased to announce our Earth Week programming, including Earth Balloon and Bash the Trash!

     April 17th & 18th Earth Balloon

Your child will have a unique opportunity to learn about our planet Earth with the Earth Balloon Portable Classroom. The Earth Balloon® is one of the largest, most unique, and most accurate globes in the world. It is 20’ in diameter and in full color.

Topics discussed:

• Geography: continents, oceans, mountains, rivers, cities, the “Ring of Fire,” time zones, seasons, and more.

• Earth science: earth’s inner structure, plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

• Environmental Science: rain forests, eco-systems, pollution, endangered species, global warming, and man’s impact on the environment.

• Places in the news. Points of Interest

• The Earth Balloon is constructed from 24 panels, one for every Time Zone, or every hour of the day. The first seam is the Prime Meridian that runs through Greenwich, England. Every 15 degrees longitude is a vertical line.

• Entrance to the inside of the Earth Balloon is located at the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean.

April 20th Bash the Trash presents Trashganza!

Bash the Trash uses musical instruments made from recycled and reused materials to explore concepts of sound, science, and sustainability. Building instruments from trash highlights global issues such as plastic pollution and climate change, and this show helps students to understand how they can become a positive force for environmental change. Along the way we explore science concepts of sound, music, and how instruments work. Our goal is to build cool instruments from the cheapest possible materials and make connections along the way. The show brings three musicians playing a variety of strange instruments including the styrolin, oil can guitar and water-cooler drums.

Chat with your children about the performance and feel free to check out more science content and instrument designs at www.bashthetrash.com, as well as instructional instrument-building videos and other fun content at www.youtube.com/bashthetrash

Please feel free to reach out to Kristin Harris, Jess Levey or Meaghan Heatherington with any questions or comments.
